The Compass

  • The History of the Compass

    • The first compass was made out of lodestone,a naturally magnetized ore of iron. Ancient Chinese people found that it would always point in the same direction; towards the magnetic poles.Early compasses were used for geomancy, "in the search for gems and the section of sites for houses",but later changed for navigation during the Song dynasty in the 11th century. Later compasses were made of iron needles and magnetized with lodestone.
    • Now, there are many different types of compasses such as the dry compass, bearing compass, liquid compass, and gyrocompass which all work a little differently.

  • Advantages of Compasses

    • Compasses are good becuase they can be used when there is no electricity. The compass is a self-contained mechanism that operates independently of electric power supply becuase it relies on the earth's natural magnets. They do not have to be taken care of and are not easily damaged. One disadvantages is that they cannot be used at the poles.
